The basics shown here are traditional Isshinryu karate. The basics in Chart I are demonstrated from the right side only, but should be practiced equally on each side. The basics in Chart II that are noted with an (*) are not required for promotion. They have been integrated into the warm-up or are used as training drills in class. The abbreviations for Chart I are as follows:

RFF, LFF = Right Foot Forward, Left Foot Forward

RH, LH = Right Hand, Left Hand

RFB, LFB = Right Foot Back, Left Foot Back

RF, LF = Right Foot, Left Foot

CHART I (Upper Body)

1. RFF RH Straight Punch

2. RFF RH Uppercut

3. LFF RH Straight Punch

4. LFF RH Uppercut

5. RFB LH Leg Block - RH Punch

6. RFB LH Side Block - RH Punch

7. RFB LH Head Block - RH Punch

8. RFB LH Open Arc Sweep - PH Uppercut

9. RFB LH Open Side Block - Nukite

10. RFB LH Forearm Block, BackFist to Nose, - RH Punch

11. LFF LH Leg Block - Five Alternating Punches

12. LFF LH Side Block - Five Alternating Punches

13. LFF LH Shuto to Middle - RH Shuto to Neck

14. LFF RH Hook Punch - LH Hook Punch

15. RFB LF T-Position - Right Elbow Strike to Rear

CHART II (Lower Body)

•  Straight Kick (Front Kick)

•  Cross Kick

•  Forward on Angle Kick

•  Side Kick/Heel and Edge of Foot

•  Side Kick/Ball of foot

•  Squat to side and kick (Squat Kick)

•  Heel Push Kick

•  Knee Strike

•  Bend over, touch floor*

•  Bend back, exhale five times*

•  Grab right toe with left hand, right hand push down knee*

•  Leg stretch*

•  Push ups on knuckles*

•  Side Twist*

•  Breathing*
